Local Events: Nov. 9th Old Saybrook Support Group for Parents and Grandparents of Children with Aspe

Old Saybrook Connecticut therapist therapy counselor counseling

Old Saybrook Youth & Family Services provides a free support group for parents and grandparents of children with Asperger Syndrome or High-Functioning Autism. This group is an open group and all are welcome from surrounding shoreline towns/area. See the below email from the group facilitator, which describes the focus on tonight's meeting, on the holidays and scheduling disruptions for AS/HFA families!

By the way, this is a recurring support group, so if you can't make this one but feel you could use this in your life, you can certainly attend one in the future!

Greetings!

Not to add any stress to your already-very-full life, but the holiday season is about to pounce!

Coming in about 2 weeks, Thanksgiving is one of those holidays in which we travel to visit members of our families - or perhaps they come to visit us. When we have one or more children with Asperger Syndrome/High-Functioning Autism (AS/HFA), these visits can not only disrupt our children's schedules (anyone see possible disasters in the making?), but they can also be fraught with stresses for us as parents/grandparents as we try to navigate potential landmines of misunderstandings about our child(ren) with AS/HFA, and/or criticism of our ("obviously poor") parenting skills.

At OSYFS's November 9 Support Group for Parents and Grandparents of Children with AS/HFA (that's this Thursday), we will concentrate on Holidays and Schedule Disruptions and Communicating about AS/HFA with Extended Family Members.

Handouts with insights by experts in the field will be available for you to take and refer to afterwards. There is no charge to participate in this support group: it is free to residents of Old Saybrook and surrounding towns, so bring a friend or family member! We meet at Old Saybrook Youth and Family Services, 322 Main Street in Old Saybrook. To accommodate work and childcare responsibilities, we meet twice on the same day, 12:30-2:00 p.m. and 5:30-7:00 p.m. Light refreshments are always available.

For more information or to register, please call Old Saybrook Youth and Family Services, 860-395-3190.

Looking forward to seeing you there, Joanne Deal Joanne Deal, M.A., Professional Counseling

OSYFS Group Facilitator P.S. As you plan ahead and set up your calendar for 2018, make a note that our meetings are held on the 2nd Thursday of each month, year-round.
