Today I want to go over the art of reverse engineering from an outcome. This concept can be transformative for anyone feeling stuck, especially within the dynamic of an affair. I encounter this issue often in my private practice where the challenge of feeling stuck can be overwhelming. The solution lies in committing to an outcome and working backward from there.

Commitment to an Outcome: The First Step

Getting unstuck starts with making a definitive commitment to an outcome, a crucial step too many overlook. Frequently, people become bogged down because they're unsure what their goal is. Whether you're an affair partner, a betrayed spouse, or an unfaithful spouse, reaching clarity about your intent is essential. Without it, ambivalence stifles progress, leaving you in constant turmoil.

Reverse Engineering: The Travel Analogy

Consider planning a trip. My daughter once expressed a desire to see the Eiffel Tower, which provided a clear goal: take a trip to Paris. This decision led to a flurry of actions—from booking flights to choosing hotels—none of which would have been clear without an established destination. Each step took us closer to realizing that dream, highlighting the imperative of starting with a clear objective in mind.

The Betrayal Dilemma: My Personal Story

In the aftermath of my now-ex-husband's affair, the chaos and emotional upheaval were immense. I realized I had a choice: continue in disarray or commit to a path, either of healing the marriage or moving forward independently. Opting to fight for my marriage as a first choice, I engaged in deliberate actions such as improving communication and working on self-regulation, all as part of my reverse-engineered plan.

Staying the Course Despite Uncertainty

Despite our best efforts, my marriage ended, a sobering reminder of the variables beyond our control. However, I find solace in knowing I dedicated myself fully to my chosen path. This unwavering commitment, defined by an unyielding truth, became my guiding North Star throughout tumultuous times.

Your North Star Commitment

Wherever you find yourself within the affair triangle, identify your North Star commitment—your immutable truth. Pursue it with determination, constantly realigning yourself to that principle. Remain flexible to adjust your approach but steadfast in your commitment. Remember, the power to change your situation starts with reverse engineering from your desired outcome.
